Coach Spotlight: Matt Santoleri Jr.
Some coaches step in simply to teach the game.
Others step in to carry on a legacy.
For Coach Matt Santoleri Jr., it is both.
Now entering his second season with New Castle Little League, Coach Matt leads the Sea Dogs in the T-Ball division, where he is helping introduce the youngest players in the league to the fundamentals of baseball and the joy of being part of a team.
Inspired by Family and the Game
Growing up in a baseball and softball family, Coach Matt learned early that the game teaches far more than how to hit or field.
As his own playing days came to an end, passing that knowledge along to the next generation felt natural. When his son became old enough to play, stepping in to coach was an easy decision, just as his own father had done for him years earlier.
For Coach Matt, coaching is about development, bonding, and creating memories that families will carry with them long after the season ends.
Playing Background
Coach Matt’s connection to the game stretches back through many years of playing.
He played baseball from T-Ball through high school, primarily at shortstop and second base. Much of his youth baseball experience took place at Brookside Little League, Newark National, and Christiana High School, along with travel baseball from ages 13 through 18.
After his baseball career, he continued competing in the NCC Softball League, keeping the competitive spirit alive for several more years.
Building on the Sea Dogs Foundation
One of the things Coach Matt is most excited about this season is seeing so many familiar faces return.
Many of the players and families from last year’s Sea Dogs team are back, giving the group a chance to build on the strong foundation they created during their first season together.
While baseball holds a special place in his heart, Coach Matt knows the sport is also a vehicle for something even greater.
Friendships.
Memories.
Lessons that extend far beyond the field.
Lessons for the Youngest Players
At the T-Ball level, competition takes a back seat to learning and having fun.
The biggest lesson Coach Matt hopes to instill in his players is resilience.
Every at bat and every play is a chance for a child to feel proud. Every mistake is also an opportunity to bounce back and try again.
Sports, like life, are filled with both highs and lows. Learning how to recover and stay confident through those moments is a skill that will benefit players in every part of life.
Building Confidence Through Fun
Coach Matt believes that confidence and fun go hand in hand.
By teaching strong fundamentals, players begin to feel capable during every swing and every fielding opportunity. Encouraging teammates to celebrate one another builds camaraderie and lasting bonds.
Through creative drills and games, the Sea Dogs are learning great habits while having an absolute blast along the way.
A Ballpark Favorite
Every team has its traditions and favorite moments after the game.
For Coach Matt, one standout at the ballpark is the hot sausage from the concession stand, which he jokingly claims might be the best in the county.
It is also a reminder of the volunteers who make the NCLL experience special for players and families every game day.
Looking Forward to Spring
As the new season begins, Coach Matt is looking forward to everything that makes baseball season special.
Warmer days.
Longer evenings at the ballpark.
And the unmistakable feeling that baseball is finally back.
Most of all, he cannot wait to get back on the field and have fun with the Sea Dogs.
